Developed in eastern Lombardy to the north of Lake Iseo and extending to border with Trento, Valle Camonica is a place that lends itself well to a variety of holidaying options thanks to the variety and magnitude of its nature, but above all because of its famed historic skiing tradition.

As one of the first Italian valleys to establish itself as a tourist and winter sports destination, Ponte di Legno was named “Italy’s first ski resort” by the Touring Club in 1912.

An ideal year-round destination thanks to its snow ascending the Presena glacier (meaning it can be enjoyed until June), its 200 km of slopes suitable for all abilities and its efficient network of modern ski lifts, Valle Camonica is one of the favourite locations for sports fans who want to have fun and rejuvenate by making the most of the vast quantities of pure beauty thanks to the natural setting of Parco dell’Adamello and Parco dello Stelvio.  

Whether you are alpine skiing purists, snowboarding beginners or fans of a more relaxed activity such as snowshoeing, come with us on this tour of Valle Camonica’s most exciting slopes and the region’s best equipped ski areas.

1. Pista Paradiso Presena
We’ll kick off our “white route” with what is considered to be one of the most attractive ski slopes in the Central Alps, renowned for both its incredible panorama and for the technical skills needed to tackle it, as this is one of the steepest slopes in all Italy. Open from November to late May thanks to its unique northern exposure, the Pista Paradiso starts at Passo Paradiso, at an altitude of 2585 metres, which easily reachable via the cable car of the same name.

2. Temù black piste
Without taking off our skis, we continue on to the Temù black piste, an “old style” ski circuit despite only being plotted in 2005. Measuring around 1.2 kilometres and with an altitude difference of 382 metres, the course starts from 1503m from La Croce to the 1121m site at the start of the ski lift. Mostly artificially covered in snow due to its low altitude location, the course can be considered a rather demanding track, in spite of how short it is, due to the hard surface, a very sloping initial S turn and narrow stretches that will test even the most seasoned skiers.

3. Superpanoramica del Baradello
For the third stage of our tour of the slopes of Valle Camonica, we head to Aprica to discover the Pista Superpanoramica del Baradello, the newest slope in the Aprica Ski Area, as well as one of the longest. The course, with a length of almost six kilometres which starts at 1950 metres above sea level from where the 4-seat chairlift to the town begins, is a blue piste, easy and accessible for beginners and children but also highly enjoyable for more experienced skiers thanks to its width and its unbeatable view over the whole Bassa Valtellina.

4. Piste del Corniolo
To conclude our alpine tour, we will follow the course leading down from the 1790m peak of Monte Corniolo down to 1200m, accessible by taking the four-seater covered chairlift that begins in the village of Alpiaz, the main centre and the cornerstone of daily life and nightlife in Montecampione. This is where the most evocative and adrenaline filled pistes unfold, boosted by a view that sweeps across the Lombardian Prealps and a practicability that is always guaranteed thanks to the computerised artificial snow system, of which Montecampione can boast the first ever facility.
